Tato Boxes Filled with Tiny Treasures

 

 

Origami Tato Boxes filled with Origami Pockets and Origami Accordion Boxes that are connected with several units creating an expanding box/book (Ayako Kawate). Origami Pop Up Boxes to store and share little colorful notes. Fun Origami Envelopes (Japanese fold called Menko) were folded to store needles and thread or to gift seeds or just to share a little surprise note.

 Papers: Dina Wakely Collage Collective Papers, Yasutomo Origami Papers, Origami Double Sided. Boxes in background were made using Collaged Double-Sided Papers and Amy Butler Design papers.

Tato Boxes are created with multiple papers of origami folds and interconnected to create top and bottom of each box...no gluing, no tape or staples!  Plenty DIY tutorials online if interested.

Shibori Tato Boxes

Origami Tato Boxes created using Origami Shibori double-sided papers. The papers had the Shibori design on one side and a variety of solid colors on the reverse side. 

Solid Blue Tato Box contains a Turkish Map Fold Book.

 Shibori Box contains a smaller Shibori Tato Box and that contains an origami expanding box (Kawate Ayako) with interconnecting units created into a Haiku poetry accordion box.

Zhen Xian Bao ~ Little Known Chinese Folk Art

 I constructed another variation of a Chinese Thread Book using Eco-Friendly natural handmade papers made in India. They have distinct textures with processes like embossing and screen printing.

 Zhen Xian Bao is a combination of bound book, origami folds, and multiple layers of compartmented boxes for storing all kinds of treasures. A compact way to store things with each of the boxes folding down flat.

 Zhen Xian Bao is a Little Known Chinese Folk Art. Women made these“Chinese Thread Books” to carry their sewing supplies. They would often include threads, snips of fabric, needles, paper patterns and other items all folded and tucked into pockets.

Black suede tie with beads as closure. Closed measures 4.5" W x 8" H. Eleven compartments and bottom layer box creates the cover of the book.

Olive Green Mini Leather Journal

I bound this mini leather journal using waxed linen thread with a 3-hole pamphlet stitch. 

The papers are handmade deckled edge papers. They are 150 GSM, Cold Press papers and are great for pencil, pen & ink & watercolor.

Measures 3.75 inches x 5.5 inches with a suede cord wrap closure.
 

Japanese Fabric Card Wallets

These are fold-over card wallets I sewed using an assortment of Japanese fabrics. They're traditional Japanese cotton prints. I used Moda Yukata Boro Multi Blue, Japanese cotton boro patchwork, and Sevenberry dragonflies in mustard gold and indigo.
 

The olive green is a sand dollar print in Japanese cotton dobby fabric.

Each is lined. Measure 3.5" x 4.5". Handy size for a mini composition notepad to toss in your pocket. 

Origami Folded Pockets with Notepads

These are Origami Folded Pockets that I folded using handmade papers cut to 9" x 12". Folded without gluing or stapling! These are Eco-friendly natural handmade papers made in India. They have distinct textures with processes like embossing, screen printing, and batik printing.

 The folded pockets measure 3.5" x 4.5".
 

The notepads were constructed using an assortment of the same papers and the 20 pages in each are Natural Lokta printable Papers. They measure 3" x 4" and bound with a simple 3-hole pamphlet stitch.
